How to send money abroad safely from the UK

Check the FCA register, compare exchange rates and avoid unexpected fees when sending money overseas.

Only use firms registered with the Financial Conduct Authority. You can search the FCA register online using the company name — this is the simplest way to check your money is handled by a regulated provider.

Compare the total cost, not just the exchange rate. Look at transfer fees, markups on the exchange rate and any receiving-bank charges before you confirm.

Keep your reference number and confirmation email. If a transfer is delayed, having the transaction ID ready lets customer support find it quickly.

Get through to support faster

The best times to call, what details to have ready and how to escalate if your issue is not resolved.

Call early in the day or mid-week. Wait times are usually shortest between 8am and 10am, and on Tuesday to Thursday.

Have your account number, transaction reference and ID ready before you dial. Support agents often cannot proceed without verifying these first.

If the issue remains unresolved, ask for a complaint reference and the deadline for a response. Most UK financial firms must respond within eight weeks before you can escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
